Sam and Rev bought a boat and are going around America's Great Loop aboard the Here's To Us!! The Great Loop is a 6,000 mile seasonal journey around the United States and Canada.
We have never had a boat this size and are certainly learning as we go.
Come along with us as we figure it out.

Great Loop # 272 Mentor, Ohio to Sandusky, Ohio | What Yacht To Do
Welcome to What Yacht To Do, a Great Loop Documentary. Today, Rev and Sam went from the Mentor Harbor Yachting Club in Mentor, Ohio on T Erie and landed at Son Rise Marina in Sandusky, Ohio. We planned to be here for a month and then, put the Here's To Us into Winter Storage. Shockingly, we ended up selling the boat we had for 5 years and completed the Great Loop twice. Happy/Sad day.
We are cruising around America's Great Loop and selected a 1999 Carver 504 named the Here's To Us!! as our Great Loop boat. So much goes into Great Loop planning and we share every trip with you. Welcome aboard!

Put water on the boat? How about, filling the freshwater tanks.
I would love to know the air draft. She looks like a tall boat for the loop. Any thoughts on that?
Has an entire foot to spare. Here are all the specifics. www.whatyachttodo.com/how-high-can-my-boat-be-for-the-great-loop/
It's so great to see "my" river being explored by people new to the area. I have paddled this canal to Ottawa and back many times in my 64 years and I am always doing camping trips of several days on it's lakes and rivers. It is a gem that I'm glad you have discovered it. I loved your experience and that you've have shared it!!!!
Thanks for following us! Great to have you on board and we love Canada 🇨🇦
It would not be feasible for most people to consider traveling the loop .
@@wesleyferguson6932 True? or False?

@@rusdavies3831 Good one!
I just stumbled across your channel. Great videos, very informative and you both have a lovely manner. I’ve been going through watching your Great Loop videos along the St. Lawrence. Being a native Brockvillian, I was so pleased to hear you enjoy per a couple of days with us in our little historical town. Lots of great places along both the US D Canadian sides of the St. Lawrence, particularly throughout the Thousand Island Region.
We are so glad you are enjoying our channel and video about the lovely country of Canada as we cruise through it last year. Brockville was a really neat city, and we actually ended up staying two days longer. Great to have you on board! 😎🇨🇦
Well done pronouncing Gananoque properly! Even Canadians have issues doing it properly. lol. So glad you enjoyed your time here on the Canadian side of the 1000 Islands.
Thank you Tina, great to have you on board with us!
Enjoying watching your trip glad you enjoyed Cornwall Ontario. lol the COVID opinion i might agree with you 😂😂
Glad you enjoyed it. 😎
You have probably already been told this, but lock one is at Port Weller, not Port Dalhousie. Port Weller is where the first canal began.
Yes!
Sturgeon lake is one of the lesser of the Kawartha lakes which themselves are all mostly mud bottomed and weedy and popular for fishing. It's well away from the rock and pine of the Canadian Shield and surrounded by farm country. It's shores are mostly all built up with homes. The greater Toronto area is only an hour away as well there is Lindsey and Peterborough even closer. Lot's of weekend warriors for sure. The nicest Kawartha Lakes IMO are Balsam lake for it's better water quality for swimming and Stoney Lake for the scenery.
Thanks so much for your experience and your information you are sharing! ❤️
That’s not Port Dalhousie, lock 1 is Port Weller, lock 2 & 3 are St.Catharines. The first 3 Welland canals started in Port Dalhousie, the current Welland canal (#4) starts in Port Weller.
@@jonhamilton5789 Thanks!
hey! So you stayed in my city, not my hometown but where I live now
Great place ❤️
The Great Lakes can become dangerous with short wave-length, steeply faced wind waves that can damage vessels and crew. But it is interesting to compare sea state discussions with those we've experienced on the N Calif, Oregon, and Washington coasts and bar entrances where large, long wave-length swells often carry confused wind chop on top.
Thanks so much for the info and your experience 😉
It's a beautiful marina with nothing to do when you get there. Also keep your personal belongings locked up as the city of Rochester is ripe with crime and your stuff will get stolen.
We were pretty fortunate when we were there. Pretty good security withe the access gates where we were. Also, great Italian restaurant nearby! 😊
Crossed the oneida lake 8 foot swells 24 ft chris craft ran her right up on the beach.allmost died 24 years old
Oh my! It's those kind of experiences that make you a believer 😎
Rev you always have such a sweet and positive tone. Thanks for sharing your adventures. I can't believe you sold the yacht. Such great times!
Oh thank you very much Jim. We do miss the boat but we will be doing more cruising in the next year. Stay tuned! 😎
I have lived in Niagara Falls all my life, and I am very familiar with the Welland Canal system. Obviously, the locks are something of a curse for the local residence because of the bridges going up and down all summer long. But having never gone through the locks myself, I found your trip very interesting. My six-year-old grandson is absolutely fascinated with the Welland Canal and needless to say we are up and down the canal, from Port Dalhousie all the way up to Port Colburne numerous times throughout the summer boat watching. He gets pretty excited when he sees some of the big freighter going by. I have gone through some of the locks on a smaller boat in the Trent-Severn lock system, and also some of the Erie Canal system as well, towards Rochester area. But they are much smaller obviously than the Welland Canal system.
How cool is that! Boat watching on the Welland! It sure is a great experience 😎
Cedar point is a nice marina and has Famous Daves restaurant right there too. Shower house and gift shop too!
Nice stop on our journey for sure 😊
made the trip many times before i retired but love the memories!!!
Great to have you on board with us! 😎
i will be there all the way my friend

Hope you enjoyed the Royal St. Lawrence YC (my home club) - and the city. Enjoyed discovering your channel.
My club too, a few years ago.
What a great spot! We truly enjoyed our stay there and it was convenient to get to downtown Montreal via Uber. The restaurant at the yacht Club was absolutely great! We ❤️ 🇨🇦
Such a great place. The dockmaster was very knowledgeable and we truly enjoyed staying there.
Mentor Harbor is my home port. And you aren't kidding the channel is skinny and I'm in a 19 footer. Safe travels
It's great to have you on board with us. Yes that was one of the more skinny and narrow approaches to a harbor. I hope the plan renovation there goes smoothly. 😎
All this automation- learned the hard way…best way to check your fuel is with a dip stick!

I've followed your loop travels from the beginning. I know your not with the boat anymore but I have a question you may be able to answer for me as I'm considering buying and doing the loop in the future. The question is , if the vessel has DPS on it, will I still be required to tie up when transiting locks ? I ask because I may do the loop as a single. Thanks in advance!
The short answer on this is yes, you will be required to tie off. Send me an email to crew@whatyachttodo.com for more information and why. Sam
My wife is French and I can attest that opens many doors in that area.
Ah yes when in Rome.... It sure did help and we were truly grateful to them. We just love Canada! 🇨🇦
what books/charts/apps would you recommend for me in planning the Florida Loop?
Short Answer is Navionics and Waterway Guide. We have online course at www.GreatLoopAcademy.com that will help prepare you. 😎

Oh yes wish we could have visited there! Maybe next time. 😎
Locals call it the Canadian Span of the Thousand Island Bridge, since the bridge has five spans as it hops over several islands.
Thank you for that information! Always great to have local knowledge! 😎
Started watching at 259. Really confused about your route. Image in video shows classic Albany-Oswego-Trent route but video is a visit to Montreal? And you mention a huge lock count that wouldn’t accumulate if you came up the Champlain canal to the st Lawrence. Looking at future video titles looks like you’re going through the big boat Seaway.
@@petercharron3268 sorry for the confusion. On this start of our third Loop we went Erie Canal to Oswego canal to Kingston and did the Rideau Canal to Ottawa. Then down the Ottawa River to Montreal, then up the Saint Lawrence River to Gananoque, turn the Adolphus reach and the Murray canal, South on lake Ontario to the Welland Canal into lake Erie.

A longtime windsurfer here, have sailed Lake Ontario in Gail warnings numerous times. Lots of fun on a windsurfer. Totally treacherous in small craft. My 13 foot mast was disappearing in a video shot from shore while sailing in the troughs. Nearby Lake Simcoe is even worse as 6 foot waves have a period one third of lake Ontario. Instant swamping if you get abeam in thise conditions. Glad you had fun.
